Piscicidal plants used by tribal folk’s of East Singhbhum, Jharkhand

Abstract : The life style of tribal people depends upon the land, agriculture, hunting, fishing and collection of forest products for livelihood. Fishing is an alternative occupation of the tribals and other folk of the area. They use their indigenous knowledge about plants for catching fish easily. For the purpose of validation, literature survey reveals that many fish stupefying plants that have been used since a long time by local people have been recently tested by many workers and are found to have many important medicinal and insecticidal properties. It was also observed that herbal fish stupefying agents are excellent means of fishing, which do not kill whole fish stock like chemicals.The present paper deals with 20 species used by the tribals of East Singhbhum district for stupefying fish. These species are being reported for the first time from this region.
