Abstract : The ethnomedicinal plant Costus speciosus (koen.) Sm. rhizome is used as a folk medicine to cure different diseases. The rhizomes were collected from nearby of six wild life sanctuaries of Chotanagpur, Jharkhand. Dried rhizome powder were extracted using soxhlet apparatus with solvent methanol. Extract was screened phytochemically for its chemical components. This revealed the presence of alkaloid, reducing sugar, gum, flavanoid, tannin, saponin, steroid and amino acid. In this paper HPTLC profile parameters had been developed for methanolic rhizome extract of Costus speciosus. These revealed the presence of active component diosgenin which is a steroidal compound and are being used in preparation of steroidal hormones and antifertility drugs. This is also used by Vaidyas of Chotanagpur as an antifertility and jaundice drug. This method will helpful for qualitative as well as quantitative estimation of diosgenin in herbal formulation.
