Abstract : Zea mays L. belongs to family Poaceae and commonly known as Maize.Maize has great economic and medicinal value. For the present investigation, seeds of three varieties of Zea mays L. i.e. DMH-849, K-99 and Proagro-4212 were collected from local Seed Centre of Ranchi and karyotypic analysis were carried out. All the varieties were found to be diploid i.e. 2n=2x=20 chromosome number. The karyotype of all varieties showed ‘nearly median’ and ‘nearly submedian’chromosomes. Regarding the total chromatin length Zea mays var. Proagro-4212 was considered as primitive while Zea mays var. K-99 as advanced.
