Abstract : Colchicine an alkaloid product of meadow-saffron plant Colchicum autumnale is powerful inhibitor of somatic cell multiplication through mitosis which may have distant bearing on the physiological function of the system. The female subjects compared to the males are supposed to be more suseptable to such alkaloids possibly due to lack of inhibiting cellular receptors for colchicine. In the present study different doses of colchicine administered in the female rat have been found to influence the intestinal function significantly leading to rapid breakdown of the mucosa cells. Correlation to this the rate of cellular absorption of sugars and other metabolites are also reduced in addition to the decrease motility & food intake in rats. The results have been discussed between the standard and treated rats.
