ETHNO MEDICINAL PLANTS USED BY TRIBAL PEOPLE IN DEOGHAR DISTRICT OF JHARKHAND

Abstract: Jharkhand state is reservoir of enormous natural resources including different types of vegetations. Since ancient time plants have been used as source of medicines by human beings. Jharkhand has 32 types of tribes. Each and every tribe population of the area has distinct tradition and taboos in their lives. Likewise local people have certain tradition to cure prevailing human ailments. First hand information on 32 ethno medicinal plants and their mode of therapeutic action was gathered from herbal practitioners and other experienced tribal vaidyas. Some of the important ethno medicinal plants are widely used by tribals for treatment of diabetes e.g. Momordica charantia Linn., Cinnamomum tamala(Buch.- Ham.), T.Nees & C.H.Eberm., Catharanthus roseus(Linn.) G. Don., Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn., and Azadirachta indica A.Juss. While others for treatment of heart diseases and arthritis e.g. Terminalia arjuna(Roxb.) Wight & Arn., Tinospora coedifolia (Thumb.)Miers etc. Besides these some are used to reduce high blood pressure e.g. Moringa oleifera Lam., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, etc. Some ethno medicinal plants are also used for the treatment of male and female sexual disorder e.g. Withania somnifera (Linn.)Dunal, Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Wild., Aloe vera (Linn.) Burm.F.etc.
