Abstract : Methallibure, ICI compound 33,828 (la-methyl-allyl-1, 6-methyl dithiobiurea) has been used as a gonadotropin block in maturing and spawned Indian climbing perch, Anabas testudineus. The Methallibure treated fish showed regressed spermatogenesis, and markedly suppressed secretory activity of both Leydig and Sertoli cells. This produces a more pronounced spermatogenic arrest and degeneration in the maturing fish than in the spent fish. After the treatment extensive interlobular fibrosis, pycnosis and degeneration of spermatocytes and spermiogenetic stages were observed in the active fish. Spermiation was apparently unaffected. Although no marked difference in cytoplasmic lipid concentration was noted in the treated fish of both groups, 3b HSDH actively was indistinct in the treated active fish and very low in the treated spent fish. The saline treated control, both active and spent, showed distinct 3b HSDH actively in the Leydig and Sertoli cells. Reinitiation and recrudescence of spermatogenesis was obtained with mammalian LH and testosterone propionate, Mammalian LH also restored the secretory activity of methallibure suppressed Leydig and Sertoli cells.
