Impact of herbicide on piscine haematology with reference to erythrocyte count and haemoglobin content of blood

Abstract : Effect of Sublethal (LC0) and Semilethal (LC50) 48-h concentrations of a herbicide (Stomp, 30% EC) on RBC count and haemoglobin content of blood of a fresh water teleost, Channa punctatus (Bloch.) at a water temperature 28.5± 0.5 C and room temperature 30.0 ± 0.5 C during breeding season ( June-July, 2004) was observed. The introduction of herbicide initiated the production of a thin slimy protective covering around fish resulting in no apparent damage to the body. There was a gradual significant (P<0.001) decreases in RBC count (TEC) and haemoglobin content of the blood of the fish in following order: Normal-Sublethal (LC0)-Semilethal (LC50). These effects are due to intoxication caused by the herbicide.
