Proteome maps of rice (Oryza sativa L.)during drought stress

Abstract : Drought stress is one of the major abiotic stresses in agriculture worldwide. To improve crop productivity, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of plant responses to drought conditions. During response and adaptation to the drought stress, many stress-related genes are induced and the levels of a variety of stress resistance-related functional proteins are accumulated. The alteration of protein synthesis or degradation is one of the fundamental metabolic processes that may influence drought tolerance. We report here a proteomic approach to investigate the effect of drought stress on the rice (Oryza sativa L.) proteome. Plants were stressed for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Total proteins were extracted and separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Not many protein spots showed differential accumulation in drought-stressed samples.
