Abstract : Two species of Aloe, namely, Aloe barbadensis Mill and Aloe harlana were subjected to five concentrations of Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%). Mitotic studies revealed major clastogenic aberrations like stickiness, fragments, bridges. Non clastogenic aberrations like laggards, tropokinesis, unequal separation, diagonal arrangement were also observed. A concentration dependent decrease in mitotic index was noticed with different concentrations of EMS in both the species of Aloe.
Regarding the parameter of mitotic index, Aloe harlana is more sensitive towards different concentrations of Ethyl Methane Sulphonate whereas Aloe barbadensis Mill is considered as resistant.
