Abstract : In the present scenario, diabetes and its complications are the most money consuming and burdensome problem in the world and is rapidly increasing, particularly in India. The present study was carried out to the experimental induction of Type-II diabetes by high fructose diet (HFD) in albino rats and to study the effect of HFD on the body weight gain, serum glucose, glycosylated blood haemoglobin and plasma insulin in diabetic rats. Feeding of high fructose diet for eight weeks resulted in significant increase of blood glucose level, glycosylated haemoglobin level (46%) and plasma insulin level (51%). The study clearly shows that continuous feeding of 21% high fructose diet ad libitum for eight weeks induces non-insulin-dependent diabetes in albino rats.
