Received 29th December, 2009; Revised 26th February, 2010

Abstract : Inhibitory activity of four strains of Lactobacillus spp. isolated from food and faecal origin, were tested against pathogenic indicator organisms; E.coli MTCC443, E. faecalis MTCC439, B. cereus NCDC240 and S. typhi NCDC113. All the tested lactobacilli cultures were found active against indicator strains with zones of inhibition ranging from 7.66 to 13.86 mm. L. plantarum from human faecal matter was found to be most active in inhibiting all the indicator organisms and organic acid was responsible for antagonistic effect.
