Abstract: From the tropics through temperate to the poles, there is a gradient in species richness and abundance with the highest in the tropics and lowest in the polar areas. Use of various cardinal information statistic indices like & diversity, abundance, evenness, similarity index and dominance for quantifying the species diversity both within and between the habitats carries significant value to depict the survival status of a particular species in a community. Ant population expected to be well diversified in terms of species variation has been sampled from northern side of Ranchi city, Kanke situated at latitude and longitude of 85°2′ N -23°3′ E & 22°55′ S – 85°10’E, having tropical characteristic. The results of these information indices for various ant species have been discussed in this paper which can explain the causes of variation in ant species richness of this area along with several biotic and abiotic factors.
